John Birmingham, a worldwide bestselling author, with a fabulous story in the 'Without Warning' trilogy. A 'What if' story of the Cold War ... a small piece of alternate history of the period told via a biography of one of its players, Lieutenant Branch McKinnon, an adventurer in a different post-WWII world of American isolationism. this alternate history from a very popular and bestselling Australian writer gives the reader a different perspective on history and where we are now!

A Captain of the Gate eBook John Birmingham

An idea for a possible book, perhaps to be expanded upon. Gritty, scary, and a really interesting alternate history of WW2. The story is based on "Operation Downfall" the planned invasion of the Japanese home islands (assuming no use of nukes). Little did we know (until after the war) that the Japanese knew we were coming, knew where we were coming, and had many more troops, ships, and Kamikazes then we expected. Every civilian would have fought to the death and the Allied casualties alone would have been in the millions. Japanese casualties in the tens of millions. I hope he writes the full book. Downside is the price for the amount of work, but it's only $2.99 for a look into hell. If you are not familiar with "Operation Downfall" do a web search. It is worth it to see what might have been.

A Captain of the Gate eBook John Birmingham Reviews

This seems to be a teaser for something bigger, but it isn't. The author has done great alt-history stuff before and since. If you haven't read any John Birmingham, don't make this your first. Go for the Axis of Time series (starting with Weapons of Choice) or his other series that starts with Without Warning. They're brilliant.
I would have taken it up all the way to the final battle. Still, I'd buy the full book if Birmingham ever writes it.
Alt-History where the manhattan project doesn't reach success in time to avoid a boots-on-the-ground invasion of Japan at the end of WWII. Birmingham provides a realistic approach to what might have happened and how in such a viceral bloody conflict. A great short story that might lead to a great future alt-history novel .
Birmingham's writing style is incredibly fluid and fun to read. He captures events and characters in both encompassing and efficient economy of words. He has more than satisfied the need for placing his events and characters in a realistic, visual form. Can't wait for new releases.
I certainly loves me some John Birmingham, but this one simply wasn't ready to release... at least not for money. As a teaser of the direction Mr. Birmingham's mind is moving in, it's fine. But as an even vaguely coherent story, it's not.
The question you have to ask yourself is this, how much do you like John Birmingham? If the answer is a lot, bordering on, I will do anything I can to support that guy, then you should probably buy this book. With that in mind, you are buying something that is only a short story, and not even a short story, but really a tiny insight into a world that the author is possibly writing about. I could not recommend this to a new reader of Birmingham, buy any of his other books, if you like them, and come back to this little effort, and give it a try.
I was through this book before I realised, probably about an hour and a half to get through two chapers (that's all there is).
John Birmingham has written some brilliant alternate history novels that I thoroughly enjoyed. In particular the way he described minor details between generations ( smoking, bigotry) made the series liveWeapons of Choice (Axis of Time, Book 1) (Axis of Time Trilogy)
In this book he has tried to describe the invasion of Japan if the atom bomb had not been developed. As someone who has been reading about world war 2 for about 50 years, I was disappointed.
His second chapter (which deals with the invasion) is extremely general and does not satisfy my curiousity.
I don't know where he was going with his first chapter. I think it was an attempt to show the effects in the future years of the casualties of the Japan invasion. But mere references to the loss of the Korean war, the battle of Singapore and the indonesian war do not cut it.
If I sound diappointed- it's because I was.
